  1. Mushy Find his Voice - this is the power of a teacher getting to know his student on a personal level (feeling comfortable enough with him to talk to him about his stutter) and going out of his way to personalize content for him (linking his speech to what worked in the film The King's Speech). This is everything that is right about inclusion.

    1. It is so important that teachers get to know their students on a personal level and that they go out of their way to help thier students. And this video shows exactly what happens when a teacher does this succesfully and proves that it doesnt only affect the student, but evrybody involved. This video represents what great teaching looks like.

  2. Patrick Henry Hughes - This video is a testament to the fact that students aren't "disabled." Look at the passion and work ethic Patrick displays and tell me he is disabled. He works harder and has more talent than a whole room full of "regular" students. Again, this all that is right with the concept of inclusion.

    1. I agree! Not only did Patrick himself work to improve his musical skills, but so did his family. When it comes to improvement, in any regard, support is a vital factor!

  3. The final entry, "Picking up Butch" is a great reason for inclusion. Notice just how much the kids, particularly the female athlete at the end, get out of working with Butch. The pride the female athlete shows when talking about helping him earn his GED is remarkable. This is an example of a great culture that surrounds its special needs people with love and respect. It models what great things can be achieved for everyone involved.

    1. I couldn't agree more. I wish everyone could include, love, and respect, not only special needs people, but everyone, as perfectly as these student athletes do for Butch.

  4. Mushy - I found this video really powerful and inspiring. It really highlights the importance of teachers building real relationships with their students and how important it is for teachers to realize that not all students are the same.

Patrick Henry Hughes - I've seen this video before and it never fails to amaze me. This video really shows the importance of different types of learning. Music definitely helped Patrick with his learning as well as his social development and it's really important for parents and teachers to realize that there are multiple ways to learn intellectually and socially.

Picking up Butch - this video actually made me tear up a little. There is so much good in the world that we just don't get to see and it's done by people like these athletes. This video shows how important it is to treat people with disabilities with fairness. Fairness doesn't always mean equal, but fairness does mean giving everyone, regardless of abilities, an equal chance at the things they want to do and this was shown at the end when the three football players were helping Butch walk.

    1. I couldn't agree with you more on Picking up Butch. This story is very heart warming and really does prove that there are still good people out in the world today. Also giving students or people with disabilties a fair chance doesn't seem to happen as often as I or we would like so, it was nice to see that they included him and were able to have hime be apart of the school/community.

  5. Mushy: This video was amazing with how the teacher really tried to get to know his student and help him overcome his stutter. He personalized the help and actually cared about the student, which is so important for teachers to do.

Patrick Henry Hughes: It was amazing seeing how passionate Patrick is about music and how much he works at it. Seeing this makes me wish that I had that much passion for something.

Picking Up Butch: I love how the athletes and everyone support and help Butch, and how much Butch supports them. And seeing the football players help him walk, and the female athlete helping him get his GED, it's amazing how much people can love and support each other

Mushy Finds His Voice- I thought this video was very inpiring and thought that it did a good job of showing what can happen when a teacher truly cares about thier student and spends that extra time to make sure his/her students are getting the best education possible. My favorite part was seeing all the reactions and seeing how it touched all the students and teachers.

Patrick Henry Hughes- This video is awesome! I love that he is so determined and love that he doesn't let his disabiltiies stop hin form achieving success in music and in life in general. I also applaud his parents for being so supportive and for being there for him whenver he needs them. It's not easy being a parent of a child with disabilities and for his dad to do anything in his power to help his son be in the pep band is amazing and something a lot of people wouldn't do.

Picking up Butch- It's not very often that something this amazing happens and to know that its been going on for at least 40 years is amazing within itself. This video shows that we should never take anything for granted and that no matter who the person is, we can always learn something from them. It was aswesome to see the smiles on all the athlestes faces and to hear how much it means to Butch. This is something that those students will never forget.

    1. I agree with you 100%! Watching Mushy find his voice was so inspiring from both Mushy's point and the teacher. The teacher really wanted Mushy is improve and that is what he did. Patrick was so amazing because he has turned his disability more into a great ability that I love watching. Butch was also cool how it has been going on for at least 40 years which I find so wonderful. That is why I agree with yo 100%! Great Job!

Mushy: This is absolutely amazing. You see how he struggles giving a speech and than his teacher tells him to listen to music while giving his speech. Well that helped him greatly and was able to give a speech to his school. This is so inspiring that this student could improve so much on his speech, but it is also very inspiring for the teacher. Other teachers may have just gave up on Mushy and say that is just the way he talks, but this teaching came up with this idea and helps Mushy!

Patrick Henry Hughes: This is amazing how Patrick can play instruments. It is so cool how Patrick from a young age can play the piano and know how to play different songs without being able to see. He has so much hope in life, the reporter says something about a disability and Patrick say more like an ability! He is so right, not many people can play an instrument that well. His dad is also amazing because how much time and effort he puts into for his son is incredible.

Picking up Butch: It is so interesting how picking up Butch became a thing when there was a snow storm in 1960. It is a life lesson that this kids will never forget to pick up Butch. Watching the football players help him walk on the field was so cool! He keeps a positive attitude even right after loss of a game. The amount of love for Butch is endless and they have kept this tradition for so many years.

    1. It's crazy to see the difference in the Mushy video from just listening to music, like you said. It's evident this teacher tried multiple things to help him improve and this happened to be the method that worked best. I agree it was inspiring even in just a few minute video it sent a great message!

  11. Mushy – Wow! It is just amazing that, with a little compassion and extra time from a teacher, a student can overcome such a difficult obstacle. It is evident that not only was the student thankful for his teacher’s help and dedication, but so were his family and peers.

Patrick Henry Hughes – Patrick’s family took their heartbreak and struggles and turned them into great pride. I wish all children had families that were this dedicated and loving. Patrick is a truly blessed, and lucky man.

Picking up Butch – It’s fantastic to see that no matter what, this team ALWAYS has Butch by their side. I assume this gives butch great joy and feelings of love. These young men are dedicated to Butch’s happiness, I wish everyone could be so loving and compassionate.

    1. I agree and like what you said about Patrick's family taking their struggles and turning it into pride. It can be destructive for parents to just ignore and deny their child having a disability but in this situation they accepted it and were more determined to see their child succeed.

    2. I agree with what you said about Butch. It's really inspiring to see how the team supports him and the lengths they will go to make him happy. The guys on the team show so much maturity and compassion for Butch, everyone can learn something from that. Butch has taught them to not take life for granted and they have shown him love and support.

    3. I agree with you on the video of Butch how it was amazing to see the compassion the school had for him and the tradition being carried down year after year. It shows the true impacts schools can have not only within themselves but also out in the community.

  12. Mushy- I loved this video. We talk a lot in class about how the best teachers are one who devote extra time to their student instead of tuning out when school is officially over. It's obvious this teacher spent that extra time to get to know this student on a personal level and is trustworthy enough for him to open up about his stutter. You can see how much this impacted the student when he accomplished a difficult task and the reactions of the student show how supportive of a classroom this teacher managed to create as well.

  13. Patrick Henry Hughes- It's amazing how they describe his disabilities as "more abilities" and how much support he has from his family and peers in music. It would be easy for many parents to not be as supportive of a child who is looked at as disabled, but instead they were so proud of him and recognized his talents. Support from family is key and this will pay off in the future when he pursues what he loves and he knows he has many people standing behind him to cheer him on.

    1. It is great to see that Patrick's family, like you said, recognized his musical ability and encouraged him the whole time. If he didn't have that kind of support, he probably wouldn't be where he is now, so it is important to recognize that not all student have that kind of support coming from their family.

  14. Butch- It's awesome that his team is supportive and just as inclusive with him as anyone else. Not only were they encouraging him but they also learned a lot from this particular teammate, something they wouldn't have had if he was not on their team. 16. "Mushy Finds His Voice" is a great example of a teacher putting in the extra work to help out a student. It is obvious that both the teacher and Mushy put in a lot of effort so that Mushy work through his stutter. Even though Mushy has struggled with speaking his whole life, the teacher still believed he could do it. It was also moving to see the reactions of all of his peers and the other teachers, it definitely had an impact on them as well.

    1. I agree, someone who has such a strong stuttering tendency is a tough case of establishing a relationship with the student, finding the source of it, and figuring out how the student is most comfortable. To have done that just because he felt it was his responsibility to, I can't say enough good things for Mushy's teacher.

      Delete
  17. Patrick Henry Hughes - Right away when the interviewer asked how he would describe his disabilities, Patrick replied "Not disabilities at all...more abilities." This shows how important it is to not classify or overlook someone because of their "disabilities", and that those who may have a disability can and should be included in activities, considering Patrick is just as good (if not better) than the rest of the marching band students.

    1. I absolutely love Patrick's attitude. He doesn't see that he has an extreme obstacle to overcome, he just sees it as a normal thing. I agree with you that they should be included in any way possible, these videos show how much of an impact that can have on their lives. They are people and should be treated as beloved humans with extreme potential.

    1. Agreed, the kind of emotional impact the students' support has on Butch is likely immeasurable. Here is a man incapable of doing most things he wants to do, being afforded the opportunity to enjoy some of them because of others' compassion. Similarly, to experience the low quality of life that some people deal with, the students are faced with acknowledging just how blessed they are, and hopefully come away recognizing that disabled people are still exactly that; -people-, first and foremost.

  20. Mushy- I thought this video was really heart warming and showed what a difference you can make in your students life as a teacher. I loved seeing the reactions from his peers and teachers, you could tell they all had so much love and support for him it was really touching to see.

Patrick Henry Hughes- This video showed that even though someone has a disability and they think they cannot achieve great things, they can overcome those obstacles and show how talented they really are. The way his dad makes sacrifices for his son and works overnight so that he can spend the day with him at school and practice is amazing and I think we can all learn something from that. My favorite part of the video was when Patrick's dad referred to him as his hero.

Picking up Butch- Butch was so inspiring and definitely had a huge impact on all of Middlebury High School. They included him in every game and picked him up and gave him the chance to cheer on his favorite team, and I think that is really special. They show him so much love, support, and compassion, just as he deserves.

Mushy: I really love this video. The teacher is helpful and genuinely wants to help this student do his best and overcome an obstacle. The student responds very well to this help, and his speech is so powerful. It brings tears to my eyes every time I watch.

Patrick Henry Hughes: As a musician, this is one of the most powerful stories I have ever experienced. His positive attitude and grateful heart is so powerful and shows there is unbridled potential in everyone. We all have gifts, sometimes it’s just a little harder to discover them. His father has helped him to find that gift, and neither have a negative attitude about the situation which helps create a good relationship between them that can encourage both to move forward.

Picking Up Butch: This is an adorable story and shows how much impact a tradition can have on someone. Butch has been impacted by many lives and his relationship with the college has impacted every student that has come and helped him get to the games. This video shows the impact that we can have if we simply go out of our way a little to show someone we care.

Mushy Finds His Voice is an excellent example of what can happen when a teacher not only accepts their student's issues, but actively supports and tries to nurture them despite said issues. Without this experience in his life, Mushy might have gone through the rest of his school career without being able to publicly speak in any way, causing who knows how much additional stress.

Patrick Hughes' life is an inspirational perspective on both avoiding judgment before we meet people, and perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. His father is the model of a loving parent, sacrificing much time and comfort in order to ensure his child has a life he'd want to live. Patrick's support network means that his innate talent is not squandered, and can be experienced by all.

Picking up Butch is a story that I'm proud to learn exists. Things which are mundane to many of us are simply beyond the capabilities some people are born with, and it's absolutely beautiful to see people come together in support of the less fortunate. The experience undoubtedly has improved Butch's life, and left the students of Middlebury College with an excellent lesson in both humility, and appreciation for that which one has.

  23. Mushy Finds his Voice - This video shows us the power of a teacher. If a teacher has a positive relationship with a student, and encourages them to be the best they can be, awesome things can happen just like in this video. The teacher believed in him and he was able to speak.

  24. Mushy finds his voice is a great representation of the impact a teacher can have on a person. It just takes thinking outside of the box and it can literally change not only their life but also it effected everyone in the room.

Patrick Hughes story shows how rewarding living not just for your own happiness but for someone else can be so rewarding. I don't think someone can not have respect for his dad, he literally devotes his life to his son and loves every minute of it.

Picking up Butch was my favorite video. I loved how the tradition had been going for 40 years and how it became apart of that campus. When he got his GED and they said how emotional it is it proves how an education can be so exciting for some who aren't as privileged as others and it really puts into perspective how we should all value not just our own education but the one we will give to others in the future.

  25. Mushy- To me, this video was about the importance about inclusion and making sure every student succeeds. Succeeding isn't always the same for everyone; it can just be about improving yourself. The student was behind in his reading ability, but instead of moving on with the rest of the class, the teacher took the time one on one outside of class and tried different techniques to help him. I thought this was quite emotional and insightful on how much impact you truly have on a child to make them blossom.

Patrick Henry Hughes- The big thing that spoke to me here was how supportive his family was. His father works the night shifts and helps his son with school and music during the day too. They both are so driven! I love Patricks optimism. He says in the video that they are not disabilities, but abilities, and clearly, he is extremely talented. I also want to point out the fact that his band director gave him the chance to be in the marching band and included him even before they figured out how they were going to include him. It was like an immediate, “Of course you’re in the band!”

Picking Up Butch- I love this video for the fact that being an inclusive person applies out of the classroom. This video showed me that a simple gesture can be the absolute world to someone. Picking someone up could be a hassle in some people’s minds, but after seeing the joy on Butch’s face when the car rolls up or when the teams start playing, I doubt anyone would be anything but thrilled to pick him up again.

  26. Mushy Video- The teacher dedication is what made this video so inspiring. Every teacher should be that dedicated to teaching and helping their students succeed. Mushy will never forget that teacher that helped him over come his obstacle. Thats was every teacher should want to be remembered for.

Patrick Hughes- Patrick didn't let any of his challenges stop him from being happy. he said in the video they are not his disabilities they are his abilities to do things. He kept a positive attitude through everything and this helped him set goals. With the help of his loyal hard working father he was able to achieve these many things.

Picking up Butch- This video was emotional. These fortunate people took what was to them just a simple act of kindness but to butch meant the world to him. He wasn't as fortunate to play sport that he loves so those football players let him live his dream through them.

  30. Mushy Finds His Voice: this video is a great and inspiring example of the impact a teacher can have on their students. It is clear that this teacher is passionate about his job and that passion made a difference in Mushy's life.

Patrick Hughes: This video showed that just because you are labeled as having a disability doesn't mean you can't succeed. Patrick specifically acknowledged and knew that he had abilities to do things not disabilities. This statement in the video really stuck out to me. His support he received from his family, specifically his father, was so heartwarming. It's important to see that even with his disabilities his family stands by him and helps him 100%.

Mushy: As we discussed in class, one of the most heartwarming aspects of this video is the reactions of his teacher and peers. It just goes to show that a school, ideally, is a helpful, caring environment that can celebrate the successes of each student and help them on their journey.

Patrick Henry Hughes- Like Chapter 4 discusses, there is a growing push for 'students with learning disabilities or physical limitations [to be] educated alongside other students and special accommodations are made for the instructional needs for all students' (Fraser 91). This is shown here, by the marching band director who told him that, of course, he would play in the Louisville marching band. His father really stepped up in order to make sure Patrick was accommodated in the classroom and on the field, by going to class to make sure Patrick could anser questions and assisting Patrick with his mobility chair. Being included with abled students has ensured that Patrick gets the education he deserves.

Picking Up Butch- Middlebury's student body make the town's community so great. The athletes that trade off seasons picking Butch up and bringing him to the games demonstrate kindness and compassion for the less fortunate. We also see that despite differently working bodies, we all have a lot in common when we connect over mutual passions, like the students and Butch connected over sports.

Mushy- I think it was awesome to see a group of students and faculty that were so patient and willing to listen, without trying to hurry him along or finish his sentences, he was allowed to just speak for himself. And extreme shout outs to the teacher who was working with him the entire time to help him achieve that himself. Mushy himself had to have extreme bravery to stand up in front of your class, be extremely vulnerable and tell your emotions.

Patrick henry- I think it was super cool, that his attitude towards things was that I don't have disabilities I have abilities. But I honestly think the most amazing thing about this all was the dads dedication to his son's education and opportunities. He devotes a large amount of his time to his sons life and happiness and I think although that is what being a father is all about you would be hard pressed to fine similar examples.

Finally, Picking up butch- Picking up butch reminds me of a story I was told at the YMCA where a women who stopped coming started getting driven to the Y by employees. I don't want to take anything away from this story though, because all the athletes commitment and the universities commmitments just to make butch feel like he's apart of something and that he is loved and appreciated is amazing. The fact that it started a random day 40 years ago and has continued for so long. One good deed impacted a mans entire life.

  33. Mushy- This was so inspiring and warmed my heart. The school body could have just listened to his speech, clapped and moved on but you could clearly tell this body of students and teachers was clearly touched. There was so much support for him.
Patrick Henry- This one I liked because it embraced his abilities instead of his disabilities. His dad mentioned feeling kind of down when he realized he wasnt going to be able to play sports with his son. Then we he found his nitch, his dad embraced it and did everything he could to help him mold and embrace his musical talent.
Butch- This is just the sweetest. I think often times these "jocky" football players can seem not "soft" and that doing something like this would be "soft" but clearly these men dont care. It is so amazing that they make butch feel like a part of the team and that he is bigger than himself.
